Former cabinet secretary and President William Ruto's coastal region agent Aisha Jumwa has officially ditched the ruling party.
Speaking in an interview with Nation Africa, Jumwa announced that she has officially joined the Pamoja African Alliance ( PAA ) that is linked to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.
Jumwa said the move has been necessited by the need for a single unified party to agitate for the demands of the coastal people after years of allegiance to non-local parties. "PAA is the official coastal region party ," she said.
She has however clarified that the move is not an indication that she is no longer supporting president William Ruto's administration since PAA party is an affiliate of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
"Later PAA shall negotiate, join and support president William Ruto's 2027 presidential bid," she said.
"Changing parties is normal. Even president William Ruto has changed parties over and over again over time," said Jumwa as she tried to explain the reason behind her move.
The move by Jumwa is a key power boost for Speaker Kingi's claim to coastal region political superiority. It is clear that PAA will be battling it out with the ODM party in most of coastal Kenya's elective seats.
Jumwa was a key cog in president William Ruto's 2022 campaign team in the coastal region. Though she lost the gubernatorial bid, Jumwa played a key role in making sure that Ruto got a sizeable number votes in Malindi.
Jumwa is known for her mobilization power. For years, she served as Raila's foot soldier holding the coastal region intact for the ODM party.
Does Jumwa's move signal possible clash between CS Hassan Joho under ODM and Speaker Amason Kingi under PAA for the coastal region kingpinship position?
