Running Mate Position? Natembeya Pulls Back from 2027 Presidential Race, Reveals His Next Move

In a surprising turn, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has announced that he will not pursue the presidency in 2027, choosing instead to seek a second term as county governor.

Natembeya explained that his decision reflects a practical assessment of where he can make the most impact. He emphasized that his political journey began with a desire to help citizens directly, and that the people will ultimately decide whether he earns a second term.

Addressing his critics, the governor accused detractors of engaging in tribal politics aimed at undermining his leadership. He stressed that his appointments and governance decisions have been inclusive, reflecting the diverse communities of Trans Nzoia.

Natembeya insisted that no matter what he does, some will always find reasons to condemn him, especially those with narrow tribal interests.

The shift contrasts sharply with Natembeya’s earlier declaration of a presidential bid, during which he argued that Western Kenya needed to produce the next president to break the Kikuyu–Kalenjin political dominance. 

At that time, he claimed to have the support of over five million voters despite facing financial hurdles that could hamper a nationwide campaign.

Aligned with the united opposition, Natembeya has consistently ruled out collaboration with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, citing past grievances and maintaining that he would never join Ruto’s side.

Political analysts now suggest that focusing on retaining the governorship may strengthen Natembeya’s base, positioning him as a key regional leader ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Observers note that Natembeya’s decision also reflects broader opposition strategies in Western Kenya, where the performance of local leaders is likely to influence voter behavior in national politics.

By concentrating on Trans Nzoia, Natembeya aims to showcase effective leadership and consolidate community support while avoiding distractions from a costly and complex presidential campaign.
