Andrew Adipo Okuome is one of Kenya’s most enduring political figures, known for his remarkable journey from repeated defeats to eventual success. His story illustrates extraordinary perseverance in a competitive political landscape.
Okuome first entered electoral politics in 1980, vying for the Karachuonyo Constituency parliamentary seat.
Despite his consistent efforts, he lost every election he contested for 37 consecutive years a streak of defeats that might have discouraged many. However, he refused to give up on his political ambitions.
His breakthrough came ahead of the 2017 general election, when he secured the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) nomination after a repeated party process and triumphed over 17 aspirants.
Given that Karachuonyo is traditionally an ODM stronghold, winning the party ticket effectively paved his way into Parliament. At age 81, Okuome finally won the seat, ending nearly four decades of electoral disappointment.
His victory was historic not just because it ended his long run of losses, but also because it made him one of the oldest MPs in the country.
During his first term, he applied his professional background including earning a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Maryland and a career as an accountant to contribute meaningfully in legislative committees, particularly in finance.
Okuome’s resilience resonated with many Kenyans, symbolising hope that persistence can eventually pay off. He successfully defended his seat in the 2022 general election, winning his second term and continuing to serve in the 13th Parliament.
At an age when most people would have retired from politics, his determination and eventual success stand as a unique narrative in Kenyan electoral history a testament to never giving up in the face of repeated setbacks.
