Kenyans Raise Over KSh 200,000 to Support Struggling Mombasa Single Mum and Her Nanny Ahead of Festive Season

Kenyans have once again proven that compassion and unity can change lives after raising more than KSh 200,000 to support a struggling single mother in Mombasa and help her nanny’s children remain in school.

The heart-touching story of Gladys, a female taxi driver and mother of three, moved many after it was shared on social media by renowned news anchor Shiksha Arora.

The mother’s struggles resonated deeply with Kenyans, prompting an outpouring of generosity just days before Christmas.

Gladys has been working as a taxi driver since 2021, trying to make ends meet in a city where the cost of living continues to rise. Despite her dedication, life has been unkind to her.

She revealed that she is a single mother of three children from different relationships, all of which ended painfully.

Her most recent relationship left her with an 18-month-old baby and no financial support. Gladys explained that she had believed marriage was in sight after her partner introduced her to his parents.

However, her hopes were crushed when he suddenly cut communication and later appeared on TikTok with another woman.

“I knew everything had changed when I saw him introduce someone else online as his woman,” she said.

With a newborn to care for and no help from her former partner, Gladys made the difficult decision to return to work when her baby was only three months old.

Leaving her infant behind was emotionally draining, but she had no alternative if she was to provide food, rent, and school fees for her family.

Her story gained widespread attention after Shiksha Arora shared it online, leading many Kenyans to ask how they could help. Within a short time, donations began streaming in from well-wishers across the country.

In an update shared later, Arora confirmed that over KSh 200,000 had been raised through public contributions.

The funds brought immediate relief to Gladys, who had been struggling to keep up with her car loan payments — a burden that threatened her only source of income.

With the donations, Gladys was able to clear a large portion of the loan, allowing her to continue working without fear of losing her vehicle.

What touched many even more was her decision to use part of the money to pay school fees for her nanny’s children, ensuring they would attend school for at least one term in the new year.

Overcome with emotion, the 40-year-old mother expressed her gratitude, saying the support had completely changed her outlook on life.

“This will be the first Christmas I will truly enjoy,” she said tearfully.

“The pressure of debt had affected me deeply. Now I can pay my loan and sleep in peace.”

She added that she is looking forward to starting the new year with hope and renewed strength, free from the constant stress that had weighed her down for months.

The story sparked heartfelt reactions online, with many Kenyans praising Gladys for her generosity and humility. Several people were moved by her decision to prioritise her nanny’s children alongside her own.

“This woman is truly blessed. Thinking about someone else’s children while struggling herself shows a kind heart,” one social media user commented.

Another wrote, “May God send such angels into our lives too. Some of us are silently carrying heavy burdens.”

In a season that is often difficult for many families, Gladys’ story has become a powerful reminder that kindness still exists — and that when people come together, even the heaviest burdens can be lifted.
